The main present research topics and subjects carried out in the Institute are the following:

• faunistics, taxonomy, biology, ecology and dynamics of Arthropoda and Nematoda of cultivated plants, such as conifer and deciduous tree aphids (i.e., Cinara, Eulachnus, Chaitophorus spp., etc.) and scales (i.e., Matsucoccus feytaudi) or spittle-bugs (i.e., Haematoloma dorsatum) and other homopterans, harmful to forest trees and ornamental crops; antagonist Eriophids to weeds; Phycitinae moths harmful to the grapes; Bactrocera oleae dynamics and control in Central Italy; thrips (i.e., Frankliniella occidentalis) injurious to the stonefruits and to the ornamental and glass-house cultivations;
• host plant relationship of phytophagous nematodes and resistance (i.e., Meloidogyne spp.);
• studies on insect pest or mite antagonists (i.e., Tortrix viridana and Lymantria dispar egg-parasitoids); rearing of aphidophagous overflies aimed to the biological control;
• plant protection by physical or chemical means and adverse effects of pesticides on beneficial organisms;
• researches concerning the role of the Apicolture in a sustainable agriculture and environmental protection; control methods on Varroa jacobsoni and honey bee defence behaviour; hazards of pesticides for honey and wild bees; palynological, physical and chemical characterization of Italian and imported honey;
• sericulture: studies on silk-worm breeding and rearing with artificial diet, hazards of pesticides (i.e., fenoxycarb) for Bombyx mori and sericulture prospects in some Italian regions.

Referring to the main special programs, the Institute was involved recently in some topics, such as greenhouses crops, forest trees and honey bee as biological indicator, in the MIRAAF national project “Biological and integrated control for crop and forest plant protection”. The present program concerns insect pests of young Douglas fir stands and insects harmful to the cherry timber cultivations (MIRAAF); insect fauna of walnut in Central Italy and related control methods (CNR); dynamic and rearing of Pyroglyphidae allergenic mites (ANALLERGO) and, finally, survey of conifer nematodes of the genus Bursaphelencus and of their vectors Monochamus longhorn beetles, in Italy (UE grant).
